A programme to replace street lighting in North Somerset is set to start this autumn, North Somerset Council has said.
Around 180 existing street lighting columns in Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Yatton will be replaced with galvanised steel or aluminium columns as part of a two-year programme.
A council spokesperson that the lighting columns, which are mainly concrete, have “reached the end of their life” and will be replaced with new columns with LED lanterns running at a reduced wattage.
They added: “The new lights will reduce energy costs, require less maintenance, control obtrusive light and produce lower carbon emissions.”
Street lights will be replaced in the following locations over a six-month period:
- Clevedon: Tweed Road, Kimberley Road, Keenes Way, Pizey Avenue and Close,
Lower Knowles Road, Fearnville Estate, Strode Road and Kenn Road
- Weston-super-Mare: Ashbury Drive, Hillside Gardens, Rendcomb Close, Prescot Close, Naunton Way, Notgrove Close, Tirley Way, Challow Drive, The Glen, and Aycote Close – and, if remaining funds are available, Birnbeck Road
- Yatton: Stowey Road and Mendip Close
Councillor James Tonkin, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for roads, said many of the area’s street lights had reached the end of their life.
He added: “The lighting units will be replaced with low energy LED units which will conserve energy helping the environment, preventing light pollution and reducing the drain on council resources.
“The cost of the new units will be recouped in future years with reduced maintenance and operating costs which one again will be environmentally beneficial.”
Mr Tonkin added that residents and businesses will be notified in advance of the works, with access will be maintained at all times.
